Food Services Attendant and Server

House of Commons

This is a Contract position in Ottawa region, ON posted May 16, 2018.

The Food Services Attendant is responsible for serving customers in cafeterias at various stations, and at the sales register.

The incumbent participates in the setup of all equipment and food delivery for all catering events throughout the precinct, and supports the Servers in the Parliamentary Dining Room. The Food Services Attendant is responsible for serving food and beverages in the Parliamentary Dining Room and the banquet and reception rooms in the buildings on Parliament Hill, for setting up the rooms, and for ensuring prompt, polite and efficient service that maintains the professional image of the House of Commons for guests. The incumbent also assists with food preparation, production, and reheating when necessary for the cafeterias and catering services, and ensures prompt and efficient delivery of catering and cafeteria services in alignment with client service, food handling, production and quality standards. The incumbent also operates the parliamentary dining room or cafeteria sale registers.


The Server is responsible for taking orders, displaying a positive attitude, being professional and communicating effectively with guests in the dining room and at banquets and other special events on Parliament Hill. The Server provides services for gala evenings, business and official luncheons, private receptions and meals in the Parliamentary Dining Room, in all of the buildings of the Senate and the House of Commons.
He/she is also responsible for taking reservations for the Parliamentary Dining Room, greeting guests promptly and operating the cash register for the dining room and special events.


  • A Secondary school diploma in addition to formal training in service from a recognized school of hospitality or three years experience as a server in a high-end hotel or restaurant;
  • Smart Serve and Food Safety certificates.
  • Completion of a basic health and safety course and/or certification under the Food Safety Training or a Food Handler Certificate will be considered as an asset.


  • Experience in customer service delivery and problem solving in a high-profile environment;
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience occupying a server or similar role;
  • Experience in the methods, techniques and practices for taking reservations, setting tables, providing table and bar services;
  • Experience in describing different dishes and making suggestions to clients;
  • Experience in recommending food substitutions to address dietary, religious restrictions and other reasons;
  • Experience in providing guests with informed advice on wine and wine/food pairings and answer a broad range of questions from both experts and amateurs;
  • Minimum of 1 (one) year working a cash register, performing various financial transactions and operations;
  • Experience in a similar position in a cafeteria or food service environment;
  • Experience with food preparation;
  • Experience in customer service delivery and problem solving in a high-profile environment.
