Lab Engineer

Myticas Consulting

This is a Contract position in Ottawa, ON posted January 19, 2022.

The recruitment team at Myticas Consulting is looking for an experienced Lab Engineer who would be interested in a contract opportunity offered within the Ottawa, ON region.

Core Competencies & Demonstrated Success:

  • Managing Intel based servers (Intel, Dell, HPE and others) and systems. Understanding BMC, iDRAC, iLO, ipmitool, Serial-over-LAN, IPMI over SSH as well as server hardware, CPU, RAM, SATA, SAS, NVMe
  • Able to update and configure various firmware, BIOS, uboot and flash firmware (eg cards, disks, NIC, BIOS, uboot, VxWorks boot loaders(we can train), networking gear and other infrastructure equipment.
  • Enable KVM access when possible/needed. Find the right cable types.
  • Work with a wide variety of embedded systems. We support ARM, Intel, PPC and other architectures from vendors such as NXP, Intel, RaspberryPi, BeagleBone, TI, Xilinx among others.
  • Understand network booting of devices using uboot, BOOTP, PXE, TFTP, DHCP and EFI booting.
  • Understand network configuration in Linux and network switches via CLI eg: VLANs, VLAN tagging, L3 routing, routing, LACP, LLDP, storm control, multicast, VXLAN, as well as IPv4 and IPv6 networks.
  • Manage serial ports, RS232, terminal servers and KVM connectivity.
  • Work safely with static sensitive boards and devices.
  • You must be an expert in the Linux shell and tools (eg bash, grep, cat, awk, lspci, man, ipmitool, ip, iptables, ifconfig, route, tcpdump) and be able to resolve network issues, collect system data, debug issues, look at devices and configure services.
  • Update and validate inventory and provisioning info as you work with equipment.
  • Skilled with vi/vim, emacs or other Linux editor. You must understand vi basics for machines with no other editor.
  • Understand SSH and key based authentication.
  • Understand IP networking concepts like TCP, UDP, ICMP, unicast, multicast, broadcast etc.
  • Must be a self starter and have research skills to find solutions to obscure problems. You are a Google pro! You “reach out” to the team as needed for help or ideas. You love to learn about new technologies.
  • Documentation skills. Be able to write new procedures as needed to document new methods of solving issues. (you can link to other sources as needed)
  • These would be an asset:
    • NAT, NAT64, BIND
    • NetBox and GLPI tools
    • RedFish
    • Understanding of Kubernetes, Docker, Ceph, Minio and Openstack
    • Experience with Git, Confluence, Jira, and Agile processes
    • Experience with SharePoint and Visio
    • Experience with VxWorks and VxWorks bootloaders
    • Nagios and Grafana monitoring
    • Automating tasks with scripts and REST API.


  • Computer Science, Computer Networking, Electrical Eng. or IT degree/diploma
  • Self-starter and commitment
  • Passion for technology, learning and researching solutions to technical problems
  • Mechanical aptitude is needed and great hands-on approach to be able to migrate, install and reconfigure boards, drives, networking gear and servers. Our work includes hardware, firmware and software.
  • Positive attitude, be eager to share findings and work well with others.
