Chief Operating Officer

We are supporting Hinterland as they look for a Chief Operating Officer to collaborate with the CEO with day-to-day operation of the company.

Publishing & releasing is the “lifeblood” of Hinterland, as this is where the team’s hard work is taken to market and where it can find an audience.

With multiple major product launches per year and a range of ongoing live “premium games as a service” titles, all which need to be tested, localized, and marketed across a range of platforms and territories, this is the area of the company that requires the tightest methodology, tools, and processes.

Your responsibilities… Collaborate with the CEO to articulate the company strategy, and take responsibility for executing it in collaboration with a variety of internal leaders and teams Create a consistent framework to be used across the company, allowing for the right amount of individual flexibility compatible with the company’s strong humanistic approach to work Champion the tools, approach, and training required to ensure Hinterland continues to be a leader in ethical and sustainable game development Help strike the right balance in the utilization of the company’s physical studio and the process for supporting a growing number of international team members Work with the CEO to create development framework and production methodology that enables predictability, psychological safety, and risk-taking within the company Ensure work is well prioritized and a rigorous process is applied to ensure the right things are being done at the right time.

Pioneer a production methodology and establish specific tools and processes for work breakdown, task prioritization, and velocity tracking Collaborate with the CEO, project leaders, finance, and people and culture teams to ensure the smooth and wise allocation of people and financial resources across the company Help create staffing and hiring plans, and work with the people and culture team to establish organic job metrics that support individual growth Help ensure the incubation and prototyping of new game projects and IPs are not unnecessarily hindered by the lack, or overabundance, of development staff Assist to optimise team organization and approach to training, facility management, and leadership The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role… Proven experience leading projects and teams in a mid to large-sized game developer or publisher Have shipped multiple high-quality video games Experience managing and collaborating with finance teams, creative leaderships, and multi-disciplinary teams Experience establishing clear processes and supervising operations, administration, and IT teams Experience with the planning and allocation of studio resources to achieve specific plans Experience implementing clear processes and tools for team communication across multiple projects and business areas Strong communication skills when managing key external relationships, especially at events or partner meetings Passionate about improvement, excellence, and the importance of product quality, culture, employee engagement, and customer satisfaction Ability to step back in order to see the big picture, whilst being able to “get stuck in” when needed Flexible, forward-thinking, quality-minded, and creative Humanistic, “soft power” leadership, with a focus on the growth of Hinterland’s developers It’s a bonus if you have… Experience at both independent and publisher-owned game developers Experience supervising the publishing and release of video games
