Programmer Analyst l


This is a Full-time position in Ottawa, ON posted September 23, 2022.

Job Summary The Programmer Analyst I programs software application modules and codes, tests, debugs, documents, and maintains those modules.

Organizational Status This role interacts directly with other UBC technology professionals across the UBC community.

This position reports to an assigned Manager within the Application Sustainment portfolio.

Work Performed Specific Duties:
– Develops, and implements assigned features and fixes within various UBC programs and software.

– In collaboration with developers, business analysts and stakeholders, provides expert advice and makes recommendations on the various design elements associated with software development.

Ensures the designs that s/he writes are incorporated into Technical Specifications as required, and communicated to stakeholders.

– Leads various projects or provides subject matter expertise to project components to project teams.

– Builds and maintains good working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve client objectives.

– In collaboration with Academic Program Coordinators and Assistants, creates, optimizes, and publishes curriculum schedules and resource assignments using database queries and programming languages.

-Modifies curriculum schedule and resource assignments as required using database queries and programming languages.

Core Duties:
– Programs small/discrete software application modules.

– Conducts testing and debugging of small modules to ensure application meets specifications.

– Prepares programming documentation for assigned programs.

– Supports software development lifecycle, and applies and follows appropriate programming/development methodologies and best practices as instructed.

– Maintains appropriate professional designations and up-to-date knowledge of current information technology techniques and tools.

– Participates in project planning and implementation.

– Builds and maintains good working relationships and collaborates with others to achieve client objectives.

– Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement This position takes an active, participatory role in ensuring the reliability and high availability of assigned systems, including application monitoring, tier 2 support, problem analysis and resolution, and ensuring services meet or exceed customer service levels at all times.

Errors in judgment, poor planning, or failure to act decisively could have a detrimental effect on the operation of the University.

Poor operation of systems will result in damage to the reputation of UBC.

Unreliable systems and code errors that disrupt the operations, or failure to meet contractual obligations for performance and availability will damage the reputation of UBC and UBC-IT.

Supervision Received Works autonomously in accordance with general instructions as to methods and procedures.

Reports directly to an assigned Manager within the Applications Sustainment portfolio.

Results are reviewed for achievement of overall and long term objectives.

Supervision Given May supervise temporary staff on a project basis.

Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.

Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
– Excellent understanding and experience with testing best practices/concepts is required.

– Ability to conduct needs analyses, plan, organize, manage, monitor, complete, and evaluate projects within allocated time and resources.

– Excellent interpersonal and team skills.

– Ability to work independently, under pressure and meet deadlines.

– Aware of the primary uses of technology by customers, learning the systems of the enterprise and the customers affected.

Responds to day-to-day requests for technical support in areas of primary usage.

Escalates questions and problems to relevant technical expert groups.
