Registered Nurse – Hepatitis C Program

London InterCommunity Health Centre

This is a Full-time position in Ottawa, ON posted December 21, 2018.

Based in London, Ontario and reporting to the Manager of the Hepatitis C program, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides front line client care, outreach, testing and health promotion, to clients living with, or are at risk of contracting the Hepatitis C virus. The Hep C program is a collaborative initiative between the London InterCommunity Health Centre, the Regional HIV/AIDS Connection, and Infectious Diseases Care specialists, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The RN Works with a clinical care team focusing on the needs of people who are significantly marginalized by poverty, addiction, mental health and housing issues. The RN will support individuals along the continuum of care from health promotion, to harm reduction. High level of engagement with the clients is essential for successful Hepatitis C treatment.

Working to a full scope of practice, the RN will also provide comprehensive primary care nursing assessment including analysis of health behaviours related to lifestyle and culture, review of client’s medical history, physical assessments, nursing diagnosis, and in collaboration with the client, develop and implement the care plans.

The RN also functions and participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs, services and quality improvement initiatives for the communities served. The RN works as a member of a multi-disciplinary team supported by Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Dietitians, Social Workers, Community Development Workers, and Outreach Workers.

The successful candidate will act with professionalism and courtesy toward clients, the general public and colleagues and will demonstrate knowledge and valuing of the client’s life situation.

Specific tasks and responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Work under medical directives to screen for Hepatitis C virus, collect blood, and provide Hepatitis C testing results, and order diagnostic tests prior to specialist appointments, while client is on hepatitis C treatment.
  • Organize hepatitis C specialist clinics (with the infectious diseases specialist), treatment clinics, fibroscan clinics and outreach Hepatitis C screening clinics in the community.
  • Provide health teaching and harm reduction strategies to prevent Hepatitis C exposure.
  • Meet clients in their own space, if that is considered more conducive to the treatment. This includes clients’ home, or a shelter.
  • Provide education on medication and treatment to client’s family and support network as identified by the client.
  • Review lab reports and assists clients in maintaining lab test schedule.


  • Post secondary diploma (RN) or degree (BScN) from a recognized College or University.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Three to five years of nursing experience in a community setting or combination of community and hospital or public health setting; experience in a primary care setting is an asset.
  • Phlebotomy skills required.
  • Hepatology, Hepatitis C and HIV coinfection training is an asset.
  • Awareness of and understanding of the social determinants of health and health promotion.
  • Ability to work with diverse communities with respect, sensitivity, creativity, innovation, cultural understanding, non-judgement and facilitation skills.
  • Experience working with people who inject drugs or use substances.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • French proficiency, bilingual skills; an asset.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records in accordance with the Health Centre’s policies.
  • Strong computer skills, including the use of MS Office Products and Electronic Medical Records (Telus Practice Solutions currently in use).
