Communications Officer, Multimedia (12 month assignment)

This is a Full-time position in Ottawa, ON posted August 1, 2017.

Reporting to the Manager, Creative Services, the Communications Officer is primarily responsible for the CFI’s audio and video content, along with writing and editing in support of External Relations and Communications (ERC) activities. This includes all steps involved in creating high-quality audio and video, from pitching story ideas, developing storylines, interviewing and writing scripts to editing, animating and posting content to YouTube, SoundCloud and other related platforms. The Communications Officer will also help develop multimedia strategies for the CFI and perform other communications functions, such as researching, fact-checking and drafting stories. The position could also include photography and helping with design, branding and website quality control.


Multimedia production

  • Work with the editorial team to develop creative multimedia storylines for and the CFI Navigator.
  • Coordinate audio and video recording at events, institutional visits and on-site, as needed. Take photos during internal events.
  • Research and write scripts and edit and upload final video and/or audio to CFI channels on a number of platforms, such as YouTube and SoundCloud.
  • Maintain the CFI YouTube, SoundCloud accounts, along with any other related platforms.
  • Maintain organized archive of video and audio files – raw footage, music, stock images and video, branding assets, final products and all related, signed waiver forms.
  • Assist with the dissemination of multimedia content in both official languages by preparing files for posting on, writing headlines and captions and preparing social media posts on Twitter and Facebook.
  • Ensure CFI accessibility requirements are met for all material intended for the Web.
  • Advise on the production guidelines for video and audio for and the CFI Navigator.
  • Fact check all content with relevant sources.


  • Work with ERC colleagues to ensure consistency and quality of all final content for, the Navigator and various social media platforms.
  • Interview researchers and gather original footage and sound files, along with material for written stories.
  • Research, develop, draft, edit, fact check and proof various ERC communications content.
  • Select images for stories and size them for various publications.


The incumbent shall have:

  • University or college degree in communications, journalism or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of production experience
  • Technical proficiency in multimedia production and other software, such as Adobe Creative Suite (including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Audition)
  • Excellent working knowledge of multimedia social media platforms
  • Extensive experience editing video and audio for the Web
  • Proficient photo editing skills 
  • Animation, motion graphic and design skills are an asset
  • Superior interviewing skills
  • Resourcefulness and ability to learn quickly
  • Attention to detail and high standard of quality in all activities
  • Superior communications and interpersonal skills – written and spoken – in both official languages
  • Sound judgement and the ability to multi-task and prioritize activity
  • Flexible outlook and approach
  • Desire to work in a small but dynamic team


Physical Demands

  • The position is full time.
  • This is a headquarters-based function with some travel.
  • Extended periods of time on the telephone and the computer requiring long periods seated.
